Cabanne de Chanrion

This traverse to Switzerland is often used in spring by regulars of the Haute Route Chamonix-Zermatt as a change to the rack. In springtime, Cabanne de Chanrion is often crowded; if you are planning to stay at the hut for the night, it would be worthy to reserve in advance!

The traverse to Chanrion
Departing from the hut (2410 m) carry on following the track until Plan de la Sabla (2610 m). After that, go through the plateau diagonally from the right to the left and then carry on straight away towards the boundary with Switzerland where you will see, even in winter, the big boundary stone. After reaching the boundary stone at Crete Sèche Pass (2899 m) continue following the boundary ridge eastwards until to reach the couloir which leads to Switzerland. There begins the descent to Chanrion; this couloir, with it's difference in altitude of 250 m, is the most beautiful and the most difficult part of the tour. Carry on then in the middle or on the orographic right side trying to keep yourself a bit upper the lower point of the Valley (snow permitting!) until to reach the footbridge on the stream that spring from Otemma glacier, where you will have to put on again your skins and reach the hut in about half an hour. You can reach Crête Sèche Hut following the route described or from Fenetre Durand and then from Mont Gelé Pass.

For any information on snow conditions please feel free to contact Daniele to the Crête Sèche Hut.
